Building Comparison

Insulated or standard? Cabin or office?

Every flat pack storage container and garden building we sell is demountable, man-portable and delivered flatpacked — the difference is what's inside the panels, and how much room you get. This guide compares the Insulated XPandaStore against the Standard XPandaStore, then the XPandaCabin against the XPandaOffice, so you can see exactly what you're choosing between before you order.

Flat Pack Storage Containers

Uninsulated vs insulated flat-pack storage containers

Both are the same demountable, man-portable flat pack storage container footprint — 2–4m × 2.1m, delivered flat and installed without a crane, even on sites a standard shipping container can't reach. The difference is what's built into the walls. For most people who plan to spend real time inside the building, or store anything that hates damp, we point people toward the Insulated XPandaStore.

Standard XPandaStore

Designed to store things.

A practical, secure, weatherproof metal garden store — heavy duty and built for everyday storage, not for spending time inside.

  • Garden storage, bikes & motorcycles, trade & business storage
  • Sizes: 2m / 3m / 4m (L) × 2.1m (W)
  • No insulation — internal temperature follows outside

Insulated Garden Buildings

Flat-pack garden cabin vs portable site office

Both the XPandaCabin and XPandaOffice are fully insulated garden rooms, built and finished the same way — the difference is scale and who they're built for. The XPandaCabin is a self build garden office kit sized for a domestic garden; the XPandaOffice is a larger flat pack site office and workspace built for business use.

Choose XPandaCabin if…

You want an insulated garden room for personal use — a home office, music room, hobby space or garden retreat — and a compact footprint that fits a typical domestic garden matters more than floor space.

Choose XPandaOffice if…

You need a proper flat pack site office or workshop with room to work, meet clients or run machinery, and the higher 2590mm ceiling and extra glazing matter for how the space feels to be in all day.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

An uninsulated unit like the Standard XPandaStore is solid galvanised steel with no thermal barrier, so the internal temperature follows whatever it's doing outside. An insulated unit like the Insulated XPandaStore uses pre-formed panels with a 40mm polyurethane core, which is what stops the overnight condensation that causes rust, mould and packaging damage in an uninsulated shed or container.

For a smaller, budget-friendly workshop or hobby bay, the Insulated XPandaStore is the usual choice, and two units can be linked together for more room. For a proper home gym, music room or garden studio you'll spend real time in, the XPandaCabin is built specifically for that. Either way, call us and we'll help you match the space to the building.

Yes — every building on this page is a demountable, man-portable container delivered flatpacked, not craned in as one piece. That's what makes them a realistic no-crane storage container option for back gardens, narrow side alleys and other tight or restricted-access sites a standard shipping container can't reach.

They're both insulated garden rooms, but built for different scales. The XPandaCabin comes in 2.3m, 3.3m or 4.3m lengths with 1 window, aimed at personal use in a domestic garden. The XPandaOffice is a single 6m size with 2 windows and a taller 2590mm ceiling, aimed at business use — a multi-person office, workshop or professional studio.

In most cases, no — these buildings are demountable rather than permanently fixed, so they typically fall under permitted development for outbuildings. Rules vary by local authority, plot size and boundary proximity, so it's worth checking your own project against our full planning permission guide.

We're the experts, not you — and that's the point. Call the team and talk through your space, your budget and what you're trying to do with it, and we'll point you at the right building before you order.
