Maintenance Advice: Put the Paintbrush Down

If your idea of a cracking bank holiday weekend involves scraping rot, sanding splinters and dripping wood stain onto your shoes, we're about to disappoint you. Here's the plain-spoken truth about looking after a XPandaStore Insulated, XPandaCabin or XPanda HomeOffice — and the one small job that actually matters.

The short version: galvanised steel and a fused powder-coat finish mean no sanding, staining or painting — ever. It's the lowest-maintenance exterior you can put in a British garden.

That actually matters: keeping your gutters clear

01 / The weekend you get back

Traditional timber sheds and log cabins look grand on day one. Steel starts differently — and stays that way.

Why wood keeps you working

Timber is organic — it breathes, absorbs moisture, and eventually rots if you don't treat it like a needy pet.

  • Sand back and re-stain every 2–3 years
  • Inspect every spring and autumn for warping
  • UV and driving rain let rot set in on missed cycles
  • At risk from wood-boring insects

The galvanised & powder-coated advantage

Zinc acts as a sacrificial layer, reacting with the elements before the steel underneath ever can. Powder coat is fused under heat, not brushed on.

  • Won't rot, warp or attract insects
  • Impact-resistant, UV-stable finish
  • Never needs treating, staining or painting
  • Available in Galvanised, Green, Blue or Anthracite

02 / What maintenance does a Panda building actually need?

We won't insult your intelligence by claiming "zero maintenance." But we're talking five minutes with a hose, not a weekend on a stepladder.

1

The gentle wipe-down

Once or twice a year — more often on the coast or near industry — give the panels a quick wash. A hose-down or a soft cloth with mild soapy water removes road grime, pollen and bird droppings.

Skip abrasive scourers and wire brushes — they can dull the powder-coated finish. Soft sponges and car wash soap are your friends.
2

The strimmer spot-check

A rogue lawnmower pebble or an over-enthusiastic strimmer can occasionally chip the finish. The zinc layer protects it short-term, but a touch-up paint pen over the mark seals it completely.

A 120-second job — dab, seal, done.

03 / The one job that actually matters

If there's one legitimate maintenance task every owner must do, it's keeping the guttering clear. When your XPandaStore or XPanda HomeOffice sits under or near trees, leaves and moss will happily build a dam.

Blocked gutters mean rainwater overflows down the wall panels, leaving streaks, and water pools around the base instead of draining away cleanly.

A simple telescopic gutter-cleaning pole lets you hook out leaves and moss from the ground — no ladder required. Clearing them once or twice a year takes five minutes.

Panda Tip: The only "bamboo" you'll ever need

Grab a slim, lightweight telescopic gutter wand — the ultimate piece of bamboo-adjacent gear a Panda owner could own. Extend the pole, hook out the leaf litter, rinse the channel, and get back to enjoying your weekend.

05 / Frequently asked questions

The questions we hear most about rust, scratches, sun and salt air.

No. Panda Buildings feature factory-applied galvanising and powder coating, creating a durable protective finish. You will never need to paint, stain, varnish, or apply anti-rot treatments to keep the building weatherproof.

Galvanised steel is coated with a zinc layer that acts as a sacrificial barrier against corrosion. Combined with our tough exterior powder coating, the steel frame and wall panels are highly rust-resistant and designed to handle harsh British weather for decades.

We recommend checking and clearing your gutters once or twice a year, ideally in late autumn after leaf fall. If your building sits directly underneath trees, an extra spring check helps prevent leaf overflow and dirty streaks down the panels.

If a heavy object scratches the powder coating down to bare metal, clean the area with mild soap, let it dry, and touch it up using a matching RAL touch-up paint pen or spray. This restores the sealed barrier in under two minutes.

High-grade architectural powder coatings resist UV radiation far better than standard timber paints or wet paints. While extreme sun exposure over many years can cause slight softening of sheen, the colour stability and protective qualities remain intact.

Saline air accelerates metal corrosion. If you live within a mile of the coast, simply wash down your building panels with freshwater every 3 to 4 months to rinse away salt deposits and keep the finish in top condition.

Built to last. Built for zero hassle.

Whether you need a heavy-duty XPandaStore Insulated for trade equipment or a hassle-free XPandaCabin for a garden workspace, you can say goodbye to the paintbrush for good.
